The Healing of Belonging

Being able to find a place where you truly belong can be one of the most healing experiences in life. Everyone wants to feel accepted, understood, and connected to something bigger than themselves. Whether it is through friendships, family, a community, or a supportive environment, having a place where we feel welcomed can help us grow and feel more confident in who we are. A lot of the time we underestimate how important our connections with others and ourselves truly are.

But, feeling like you belong is a journey. There are going to be times when we feel alone, out of place, or unsure of where we fit in, but through all that we are discovering the right spaces and discovering new people as well as new experiences that teach us we are valued. Moreover, belonging is not just about being around others; it’s also about finding a place where we can be our authentic selves.

The Impact of Being Known is to Be Seen

There is a difference between being noticed and being truly known. Being known means that someone takes the time to understand your story and your experiences while also accepting the person you are beyond what others see on the surface. It’s the feeling of being valued not for what you do or what you can offer, but simply for who you are.

People come in and out of our lives as we grow up. There will be some people who we never see again and some who stick by us our whole lives. It’s important to choose the right ones because those are the ones that can change your life. People who genuinely know and accept us for who we are can offer a great deal of comfort and support. When we’re given that safe space, it allows us to feel close enough to be honest about our feelings, embrace our strengths, and accept the parts of ourselves that we are still learning to love. When we feel understood, we are reminded that we do not have to face every challenge alone.

For example, after high school, I myself felt very lost in life. I didn’t know who to talk to or hang out with as my friends had all disappeared. Of course it was understandable; we were all figuring ourselves out, but during that time I isolated myself and forgot what it was like to have those connections. I forgot how warm it felt having someone be there for you, and how powerful it felt having someone reach their hand and pull you out from that dark room. Sometimes we forget how that one person can help you find that light and help us bring that smile back.

Creating a sense of belonging starts with recognizing the importance of truly seeing one another. And looking back, I realized  how meaningful it is when someone chooses to see you during the moments when you feel the most unseen. Sometimes we don’t realize how much a simple conversation, a kind gesture, or someone reaching out can impact our lives. We have to remind ourselves to be willing to be there for each other, because ultimately it shows us that we are not alone and that there is still light waiting for us. Being known is not about having someone fix everything, but about having someone remind us that we are worthy of connection, support, and happiness!

Finding a Place Where You Truly Belong

Furthermore, there are always moments in life when we may feel like we are searching for a place where we truly fit. Whether it happens during high school, after college, or even growing up while we are trying to understand ourselves, feeling disconnected can leave us wondering about where we belong, or if we even belong anywhere or with anyone. It can be a very lonely feeling, but it is also a reminder that we are still growing and discovering who we are and it can also give us an opportunity to discover how to love ourselves with our own company.

However, finding your place isn’t something that happens right away. Sometimes, we have to be willing to step into new environments, meet new people, and also allow ourselves to be open to new connections. It can be uncomfortable at first and scary. For me, I always get nervous talking and  hanging out with new people, but being able to take those small steps toward others can lead us to spaces where we feel welcomed and understood, while also taking those chances that can change our lives for the better.

It’s also important to remember that belonging is not about changing yourself to be accepted. Sometimes it can feel like that because we can’t fit in at the first chance we get, but it’s okay to not get it right the first time. Some groups may end up being a bad influence, but finding the right ones never encourages you to try something you don’t want to. The right people and communities will appreciate you for who you are and encourage you to continue growing. You should never have to hide parts of yourself just to feel like you have a place.

Recently, I heard someone say you miss all the chances you don’t take. It may feel scary at first but it’s only for a couple of seconds, almost like jumping into a pool. So if you are currently in a season where you feel lost or unsure of where you belong, be patient with yourself. Keep showing up, keep exploring, and trust that there are places and people waiting to welcome you. The journey of finding belonging teaches us the most about ourselves and reminds us that we were never meant to walk through life alone.

Creating Spaces Where People Feel Welcome

Belonging is not only something we hope to find, it's also something we can create for others as well! A welcoming space can be found anywhere, whether it is with friends, family, a community, or even a simple conversation with someone who makes us feel valued. The smallest acts of kindness can make a person feel like they finally have a place where they belong.

Creating a space where people feel comfortable starts with the way we treat one another. Taking the time to listen, showing compassion, and being open to someone’s story can make a bigger impact than we may realize. It’s the small acts that add up into something meaningful and impactful. Moreover, we have to be mindful that everyone also carries experiences that others may not see, and remember that being understanding can help someone feel less alone.

In addition, we all have the ability to be that safe place for someone else, but that does not require us to have all the answers or fix someone’s struggles. Sometimes it can be overwhelming when we become too dependent on someone. That’s why simply being present and reminding others that they matter can create a supportive environment. We want to build something that makes everyone feel respected, appreciated, and free to be themselves.

When we create spaces where everyone feels welcomed, we are able to build stronger connections and communities. Belonging grows when we choose kindness and make room for others, not when we judge someone for simply being who they are. Sometimes, being the person who reaches out can be the moment that helps someone find comfort and a place where they feel they truly belong.

Learning to Belong Within Yourself

We spend so much time searching for a place where we belong that we often forget to create that feeling within ourselves. Belonging is not only about finding the right people or environment, but it's also about building a relationship with ourselves where we feel safe, accepted, and comfortable with who we are. Loving and accepting ourselves comes first in order to love and accept others and find places that make us feel that way, or else we may go into spaces that end up being a bad influence on us.

The way we speak to ourselves and care for ourselves can shape how we experience the world around us. This  means being able to embrace your strengths, your imperfections, and every part of your story that has made you who you are. There will be moments when you may feel uncertain or disconnected, and it's okay to feel that way,  but we can use those moments as opportunities to learn more about ourselves and grow.

When we begin to accept ourselves, we no longer feel the need to change who we are just to be accepted by others. Instead, we become more confident in showing up as our authentic selves and creating deeper connections. The love and understanding we give ourselves becomes the foundation for the relationships and communities we build with others.
