Belonging is a deeply rooted, powerful, and authentic human experience. It allows us to feel truly valued and accepted by our peers and loved ones, in a way that feels like we’re “coming home.” For many people, the idea of what belonging means has always been tied to similarity. That means being around a community of people from the same background, culture, or certain beliefs.
While all of these characteristics can create a sense of safety and comfort, they don’t fully encapsulate what it means to actually belong. To define belonging, it does not solely rely on sameness and uniformity, but it also relies on diversity. By embracing our differences, we as humans gain the opportunity to understand each other’s community and personal identity in a way where belonging takes on a whole new meaning.
Diversity Expands Authenticity
Diversity gives light to different factors of identity, which includes gender, race, culture, and experiences in life. Each person you come across in life brings new and unique perspectives molded by these factors. When your own perspectives meet new perspectives, it creates a special environment that is rich in diversity and is inclusive. Diversity allows a person to explore what is beyond their own and ultimately allows a person to also uncover things about themselves.
One of the most impactful ways diversity can shape belonging is through authenticity. When people find themselves in environments where diversity is limited, people normally gravitate towards conforming to a ruling norm which often leads to unwanted pressure. The sense of belonging automatically fades. On the contrary, people are more likely to feel comfortable and accepted in spaces that cherish and celebrate diversity. This article titled How Diversity Makes Us Smarter goes more in-depth on positive effects when diversity is being accepted. The fear of judgment disappears and individuals are able to express themselves and their true identity. True belonging is about staying true to yourself and people embracing you, not about changing parts of yourself to fit in. Diversity makes this a reality by creating spaces that accept and recognize difference instead of covering it up.
Understanding diversity also allows you to observe identity. It is a reminder that every individual is unique and complex in their own way. With the many perspectives that we encounter throughout our life, we come to understand that belonging can be found in various areas rather than being limited to an experience or community.
Personally, I experienced belonging in many ways throughout my high school days. Transitioning from middle school to high school, everything resets. During my first couple of months in high school, I remember feeling like an outsider, and my sense of belonging within my community of students was non-existent. That’s when I decided to put myself out there and connect. I joined a couple of clubs which helped me to build new connections and gave me that sense of belonging. Regular conversations with my classmates which led to shared experiences was another way I felt accepted. Over time, my sense of belonging grew. I had a lot of new friends, I gained new perspectives, and I also uncovered things about myself. This experience of mine really allowed me to go through the stages of belonging from start to finish. It was a gradual process that was created by environments and relationships, where moving through each stage helped to build my personal identity, confidence, and connections.
Developing Growth and Empathy
Another example of how diversity shapes our understanding of belonging is by nurturing growth and empathy. When people have interactions with individuals from different backgrounds, they’re prompted to listen and learn. Interactions such as this often test people’s own assumptions and help them gain a better insight into others. This leads to strong empathy, which is very important for building inclusive communities.
There can still be space for discomfort when it comes to diversity. Bringing attention to unfamiliar perspectives could harm lifelong beliefs and force people to question and confront their tendencies. However, this can be an opportunity for growth and understanding. Picture a college student engaging in a discussion about heritage. They might feel anxious in the beginning when a classmate shares their experiences that differ from their own morals and beliefs. Instead of becoming defensive, the student actively listens with full respect, engages with considerate questions, and reflects on this experience afterwards. Rather than completely avoiding discomfort because of unfamiliarity, give in to these moments with full respect and openness. Having the willingness to grow as an individual and to open your mind to new ideas all the more strengthens the belonging within a society.
Diversity alone cannot create a sense of belonging, but rather factors such as inclusion can strongly contribute, allowing people of different backgrounds to feel valued. There are instances where diverse spaces are lacking in inclusiveness and people feel far from being respected. True belonging requires action and attitude that is intentional. Having spaces where everyone can contribute, voice their opinions, and have mutual respect for each other can really bring belonging to a whole new level.
As a new intern here at The Love Yourself Foundation, from day one I felt a strong sense of belonging that this group maintains. From the lead staff to the other interns and workers, everyone makes everyone feel welcome and very seen. Every time we log in for our online meetings, it’s always a great time. The fact that we always start our meetings with our highs and lows shows how much of a safe space it is for all of us to truly be ourselves. This semester’s group really feels closely bonded and I appreciate all the people I’ve met so far here at LYF who have given me that sense of belonging!
Building Strong Communities
With the world being more interconnected than ever before, diversity is at an all-time high. People are constantly exploring different cultures and backgrounds, learning from people throughout the world. This gives us a large-scale perspective on belonging, redefining our mindset that belonging can be worldwide. We can also learn that belonging can be built on shared humanity and respect.
Schools and places of work that focus on diversity often see an increased growth of collaboration, connection, and innovation because individuals feel more cherished for their unique inputs. With this in mind, individuals are more likely to have the enthusiasm to learn from one another, leading to more dynamic levels of belonging. You can read more information found in the article 3 Benefits Of Diversity In The Workplace.
Stereotypes often limit the feeling of belonging, but diversity helps to break that down. People being exposed to different backgrounds allows them to see individuals from a different light rather than going off of their own assumptions. Once we take off the labels that people tend to put onto others, we can shift and create spaces where people from all backgrounds and cultures can feel comfortable and included.
Altogether, diversity helps us to understand and expand the meaning of belonging. Belonging is really about who we are as people, and what makes us unique. It’s not about changing ourselves and conforming to the norm. Belonging should make us feel accepted and fully seen. All the more, it should make you feel like your differences are beautiful.
Main Takeaways
Belonging is not a fixed concept, but rather, it’s a concept that allows people to grow within themselves, to learn new things, and to connect with individuals. In regards to diversity, it adds a new layer to the complexity of humans. It gives us opportunities to deepen the appreciation that we have for each other’s uniqueness which gives life to inclusion. Truly embracing diversity and our differences is the ultimate way to feel that sense of belonging.
Diversity was never meant to separate us from each other. It was meant to be celebrated and accepted so that we have the ability to learn from one another. By accepting and embracing diversity, not only do we allow communities and individuals to be stronger, but we also transform what the true meaning of belonging is.
